According to StarWars.com, J.J. Abrams will be the writer and director for Episode IX!
Recently Lucasfilm has parted ways with Colin Trevorrow. There were many names being tossed around the internets as to who would actually take on the role of director for Episode IX, including: Ron Howard, Rian Johnson (who directed The Last Jedi) and many other names. J.J. Abrams will take on directing duties as well as writing duties. The movie will also be co-written by Chris Terrio. Abrams kicked off the new trilogy with Star Wars: The Force Awakens. It makes sense that he would be brought back to finish and close the proverbial circle on what he started.
Episode IX will be produced by Kathleen Kennedy, Michelle Rejwan, J.J. Abrams, Bad Robot and Lucasfilm.
Kathleen Kennedy, President of Lucasfilm had the following to say:
“With The Force Awakens, J.J. delivered everything we could have possibly hoped for, and I am so excited that he is coming back to close out this trilogy”
Star Wars: Episode IX is scheduled to be released on May 24th of 2019!
