Thank you to Warner Bros. Home Entertainment for chance to review the Dunkirk 4K Ultra HD combo pack!
To me, Dunkirk IS the movie of the year! I say that and there aren’t very many lines of dialogue in the movie. Somehow, some way, Christopher Nolan has outdone himself once again! The genius of Nolan is simply letting the picture doing the talking, so to speak.
This is the telling of a World War II epic that showcases the storytelling of Nolan at his best. You get to see details of the evacuation of British soldiers trapped on the harbor and on beaches of Dunkirk, France, by the Germans. The conundrum is that the soldiers are within an hour of being home, but have no way to get there. The shallow waters near the beach make it difficult for the big ships to reach the beach itself for the men to board. Coming from the city to the beach are the German’s trying to attack and finish World War II.
In the movie, you’ll see a lot of scenes in the cockpit of a plane, where you actually feel the limited space with the picture on the screen, almost kicking the claustrophobia that you might not have known you have, along with the heights that plans fly, being in the darkest of dark, fire and even drowning, pick your poison. Those fears are what Nolan plays on in the movie to keep all of your sense tingling. When the plane gets too close to the water, you almost want to look to either side of your seat, to make sure there’s not ocean water there for you to reach out and touch.
The HDR is ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL! The nozzle flashers from the bullets coming out of guns, both hand-held and on aircraft to the fires that are burning from destroyed boats and airplanes show bright. Touching on the many phobias that one can feel watching this movie, when some of the crew is stuck in the dark, the dark is definitely dark. Another scene that comes to mind is when they jump in the empty hull of a ship and bullets start flying their way, the water starts to consume the ship, the water is crystal clear on screen!
To make things standout even more, at the end of the movie, you can hear words from Winston Churchill, being read by a soldier in the newspaper.
Along with the HDR, the Dolby Surround is the ultimate way to watch this movie! You feel like you’re in the cockpit of the plane, inside the boat and on the beach thinking of what you can do next to just survive! Hans Zimmer’s score is another thing that needs to be heard in a surround sound system!
I’d rate Dunkirk an A+ and a MUST SEE if you haven’t! This would make a GREAT stocking stuffer!
