REVIEW: Home Again Blu-Ray Combo Pack

Thank you to Universal Pictures Home Entertainment for the opportunity to review Home Again Blu-Ray Combo Pack!

The best way to describe Home Again is as a Romantic Mom-edy (a combination of romance, mom and comedy).

Life takes you through ups, downs and a lot in between the two. Home Again showcases a little bit of each point and the in-between. Reese Witherspoon’s Alice Kinney is going through a separation. She decides to move back to the home in which she was raised, along with her kids, to the west coast, leaving her husband in New York. The movie starts on her 40th birthday, which makes her think back to her father, an Oscar-winning director from the 70’s, who married her mother, an ex-actress, Candice Bergen, a lead from one of his movies. Her late father’s house is HUGE, has a pool, courtyard and also a nice sized guest house. She drops off her daughters at school, even though they get out of the car reluctantly. She then heads to lunch with friends. She plans a night out with the ladies to celebrate her birthday.

It is during the celebrating that she meets three cash-strapped filmmakers/actors (Nat Wolff, Jon Rudnitsky and Pico Alexander; Teddy, George & Harry)). The trio are going through hard times, just been kicked out of the hotel they were living in but received good news that someone was interested in their short film. They are also celebrating at the same place that Kinney and her friends are. Alice and Harry hit it up and almost end up sleeping together, but Harry drinks a little too much and the after effects hit him in bed. When Alice wakes up to do her normal motherly duties, she realizes that more than Harry came to the house! She rushes to clean and the door is opened by her daughters and mother. Alice has a meeting to go to for a potential client, so she takes the kids to school and heads to the meeting. Her mom stays behind talking to the trio of young men, volunteering Alice’s newly inherited guest house as a place for them to stay while they procure funds for their film.

The guys endear themselves to Alice’s daughters and Alice as well as vice-versa. The young men help the daughters overcome fears and anxieties in performing on stage, writing a story, fixing things that need fixing in the house and generally filling roles that a husband would do if he were around. Alice’s mother (Bergen) loves them, telling the guys stories of her ex-husband’s films and her roles in them and other movies.

The plot twist here is that the ex-husband decides to surprise Alice unannounced at the worst possible time. The husband doesn’t like the fact that there are other men around his daughters, but only recognizes so after he has been absent from their daily life for a while.

Yes, most of the movie is cliche. What makes it different is the way the story is told and the trio of young men filling the role of a husband.

Personally, I give Home Again a B+
