The Red Dead Online Beta is now available to ALL players who own Red Dead Redemption 2!

Over the last few days, Rockstar Games have been slowly rolling out the online mode for the fantastic Red Dead Redemption 2. Red Dead Online is currently available to all players who own a copy of Red Dead Redemption 2. The online mode can be selected from the main menu. It is currently in Beta form which means that Rockstar is actively listening to feedback and improving various aspects of this online experience.

Red Dead Online takes place in the same game world / map as the story mode. It let’s you create your own character and play with friends or random players online. Players must carry out various missions so they can earn XP and money. These are used to unlock new abilities as well as to buy new items in-game, such as clothing, weapons, horses and much more.

Here is what Rockstar have said about it:

‘The world of Red Dead Online will be a continually expanding experience. There will also be some additions and updates throughout the Beta period. Starting this week, you can ride with friends in a Posse, set up your Camp, embark on cooperative story-based missions or go head-to-head in competitive series, find strangers throughout the world to help (or hurt), tackle spontaneous Free Roam challenges, go hunting, fishing, bond with your horse, explore with friends or on your own (but look out for ambushes), and much more.’

Features:

  • Honor System: Your actions will affect your honor in this mode (similar to how it worked in Story mode). Some missions may change depending on how much honor you have.
  • Character Creation: Create your own outlaw and choose his / her clothing, hairstyles and much more.
  • Free Roam Missions: During free roam, head over to the Stranger icons throughout the map alone or with your Posse to embark on Free Roam Missions.
  • Multiple competitive game modes: These modes can be entered by visiting the Showdown Series Markers on the map.

Here are some of the competitive modes available right now:

  • Shootout / Team Shootout: This is like a classic deathmatch / team deathmatch mode where there are unlimited lives and whoever gains the most kills before time runs out wins the match.
  • Make it Count: This mode only lets players use bow and arrows as well as knives. The last player standing wins. The player area will gradually shrink as time passes, until there is nowhere else to run. This seems to be Rockstar Games’ take on Battle Royale and looks like a lot of fun.
  • Most Wanted: A tactical race to the top. Every kill pushes you up the scoreboard, but watch out: the closer to the top you are, the more points everyone else gets for killing you.
  • Hostile Territory: This team based mode requires you to capture territory and hold it in order to gain points. The team with the most points wins.
  • Name your Weapon: Demonstrate your personal specialty in this free-for-all or team based match: the trickier the weapon you use to land the killing blow, the more points you get.

All of these modes are available now, alongside free roam mode. Free roam is where you can simply explore the open world and encounter other real life players. You can work together or engage others in combat.
