Halloween is approaching! Here is a list of some of the movies I like watching during this time of year!

Halloween is a very enjoyable time of year. I always enjoy watching a ton of horror movies. These include all types of horror (thrillers, comedies etc). The list below is in no particular order and covers a range of horror genres. There should be something for everyone here. These are all movies I have seen many times.

The Thing (1982):

Directed by John Carpenter (my favourite director) and starring Kurt Russell, this movie is a true classic.

This is a brilliant horror movie and is a great watch at this time of year. The remote Antarctic location creates a true feeling of isolation. This adds a lot to the movie and really makes it stand out amongst other Sci-fi / alien horror movies.

Here is the synopsis and trailer:

A research team in Antarctica is hunted by a shape-shifting alien that assumes the appearance of its victims.

The Lost Boys (1987):

This is another 80’s classic. It stars Corey Haim, Corey Feldman, Jason Patric, Kiefer Sutherland and more. It is easily one of my favourite vampire movies of all time. Great story and an awesome soundtrack too. This is a very fun movie to watch, especially if you are a fan of 80’s movies.

After moving to a new town, two brothers discover that the area is a haven for vampires.

Trick ‘r’ Treat (2007):

This is a very entertaining movie set in a small town during Halloween. It follows multiple short storylines which are all taking place at the same time, on the same night, in the same town. Each story is linked to the other as well. It’s a perfect Halloween night movie as it provides horror, comedy and more, all in one. Here is the official synopsis and trailer:

Five interwoven stories that occur on Halloween: An everyday high school principal has a secret life as a serial killer; a college virgin might have just met the guy for her; a group of teenagers pull a mean prank; a woman who loathes the night has to contend with her holiday-obsessed husband; and a mean old man meets his match with a demonic, supernatural trick-or-treater

Tales of Halloween (2015):

Similar to the above movie, Tales of Halloween has 10 interwoven short horror stories. These are all great and have a dark sense of humour to them. I really loved how each short story focuses on a different genre of horror. For example, stories can focus on UFO’s, Ghosts and much more. Definitely worth considering for Halloween!

Here is the synopsis and trailer:

Ten stories are woven together by their shared theme of Halloween night in an American suburb, where ghouls, imps, aliens and axe murderers appear for one night only to terrorize unsuspecting residents.

Scream (1996):

This is a classic 90’s slasher movie starring Neve Campbell, David Arquette and more. I have seen the Scream movies many times. The original is my favourite. These 90’s slasher movies were not perfect but were always fun to watch.

Here is the synopsis and trailer:

A year after the murder of her mother, a teenage girl is terrorized by a new killer, who targets the girl and her friends by using horror films as part of a deadly game.

I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997):

Another enjoyable 90’s movie, starring Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr.

Four young friends bound by a tragic accident are reunited when they find themselves being stalked by a hook-wielding maniac in their small seaside town.

Scary Movie (2000):

The original Scary Movie is a hilarious horror / comedy movie to watch on Halloween. It did a great job of poking fun at the popular horror movies at the time. It was directed and written by the Wayans Brothers.

Here is the synopsis and trailer:

A year after disposing of the body of a man they accidentally killed, a group of dumb teenagers are stalked by a bumbling serial killer.

IT (2017):

I loved the new IT movie. It was a great horror movie. It stars Bill Skarsgård and others. It is genuinely a creepy movie and the acting is awesome. Here is the synopsis and trailer:

In the summer of 1989, a group of bullied kids band together to destroy a shape-shifting monster, which disguises itself as a clown and preys on the children of Derry, their small Maine town.

Beetlejuice (1988):

Another classic horror / comedy movie starring Michael Keaton, Geena Davis, Alec Baldwin and Winona Ryder. This is one of my all-time favourite movies. It has hilarious moments in it and is also a horror movie. Michael Keaton’s acting is brilliant. He is amazing as Beetlejuice. Here is the synopsis:

A recently deceased husband and wife commission a bizarre demon to drive an obnoxious family out of their home.

Sinister (2012):

A great modern horror movie starring Ethan Hawke.

Washed-up true-crime writer Ellison Oswalt finds a box of super 8 home movies that suggest the murder he is currently researching is the work of a serial killer whose work dates back to the 1960s.

The Conjuring (1 and 2):

The Conjuring

hese movies are both awesome horror movies to watch on Halloween. They have great storytelling and some terrifying moments. Here is the synopsis and trailer for the first Conjuring movie:

Paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren work to help a family terrorized by a dark presence in their farmhouse.

The Shining (1980):

NothingButGeek's Halloween Movie Guide!

This is a classic horror movie starring Jack Nicholson, based on the popular Stephen King novel. It has brilliant acting and storytelling. Here is the synopsis and trailer:

A family heads to an isolated hotel for the winter where an evil spiritual presence influences the father into violence, while his psychic son sees horrific forebodings from the past and of the future.

These are just some of the movies I like to see during this time of year. There are many more, including classics like The Exorcist. The Horror genre is very diverse and there is so much to choose from.

Happy Halloween from everyone at Nothing But Geek!!!
