Thank you to Warner Bros. Home Entertainment for allowing me to review the Geostorm Blu-Ray Combo pack!
Geostorm is a disaster movie, plain and simple. The interesting thing, it touches on some realities, such as governments messing with and trying to control the weather. All of this is done from a space station named Dutch Boy, sends down elements to control the weather on the Earth. The one thing that comes with a disaster movie, at the end of it, it usually offers one thing: HOPE. This movie hit theaters around the time when there were hurricanes and all sorts of natural disasters occurring.
Gerard Butler’s character, Jake Lawson is the person who built the Dutch Boy. He comes back down to Earth to talk at a Senate hearing, which stirs up trouble for him and also his brother, Max, who just had been given control of the Dutch Boy, without his brother’s knowledge. After the outburst at the Senate hearing, he is given his walking papers. Lawson then moves to a secluded location that within vicinity of Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida. He tries being a father to a daughter he’s never really been around.
Years later, when Dutch Boy starts doing things on it’s own (or from the insertion of a virus), the President, Andrew Palma (Andy Garcia) tells Max that he needs to find the one person that could fix things and it didn’t matter who it was, including if it were his brother. Big brothers tend to have a problem with little brothers and vice versa, it’s a time honored tradition that they have a power dynamic between the two, in this movie, things are no different. Max drives to Jake’s home and talks to his niece, who he hasn’t seen in years. The part that actually convinces Jake to do whatever is needed, is when he starts hearing the extreme weather, almost immediate freezing in Afghanistan, that has people instantly frozen in the streets. Later on, in Hong Kong, extreme heat is later reported to be gas lines breaking. Apparently, there are a couple of people that are figuring out what’s going on, but they are “offed” rather quickly, after finding out.
Back on the Dutch Boy, Jake almost loses his life while out trying to retrieve a harddrive on a door (!?). There are a coupe of plot twists that are included on the space station and also back on Earth.
I think the talents of Abbie Cornish are wasted. I like her in a lot of the other movies she’s been in, but she was sort of just there in this movie.
The visual effects that were done for Geostorm are pretty damn good! You get the chance to see water coming onto a beach and freezing the moment it touches the beach, freezing people at the same time. There’s also what were believed to be gas pipes exploding in Hong Kong, that turned out to be the temperature changing dramatically.
The bonus features are solid, breaking down some of the visual effects that were used and how they were designed.
I have yet to see Ed Harris play a GOOD GUY!
I give GEOSTORM a C+
