First and foremost, thank you to Warner Bros. Home Entertainment for allowing me to review the GAME NIGHT Blu-Ray Combo Pack!
Game Night is something I enjoyed! I’ve lived it, well sort of… I’m 38-years old now. Been married (and now divorced). I didn’t question whether or not the kids would put a pause on anything that was going on in my life though, but I understand the thought process. There are A FEW plot twists. There’s laughs. There’s also creepiness with the former game night attendee Gary, who is a cop and also now divorced from his wife. The movie is all about couples and having game night at someone’s house when they get the time to. Max (Bateman) and Annie (McAdams) invite everyone over to their house for game night, with Max’s brother Brooks coming over. The thing is, Max is the brother that gets all the ladies, has all the money, is successful at his job and at life in general. He is a WINNER. Max has never beat his brother at ANYTHING! Everyone is told to park far away and to come to the house quietly to not offend Gary, who isn’t invited since he doesn’t have a partner to play games with. Brooks of course isn’t forewarned or chooses to ignore the warning, pulling up honking and driving a loud car, a 1972 Corvette Stingray, which also happens to be Max’s dream car. Brooks comes in and embarrasses Max with a joke about their childhood. Brooks kicks Max’s but at the game they’re playing. Brooks then invites everyone over to his house for the next game night.
Of course, the house that Brooks is renting out is a mansion compared to the “small and cozy” home that his brother owns. He vows that tonight will be THE game night that everyone remembers for the rest of their lives. Brooks has set up a murder mystery game night. Brooks is supposed to get kidnapped. The couple that solves the mystery will win the 1972 Corvette Stingray that Brooks drove to his brother’s house. The thing is, Brooks ends up getting kidnapped right before the actual game company kidnappers show up. The group doesn’t know that the first kidnapping is REAL! The main kidnapper threatens to kill Brooks unless the group returns a Faberge egg. The couples go their separate ways. Kevin (Lamorne Morris) and Michelle (Kylie Bunbury) find out about a celebrity that one of them may or may have not slept with during a “break.” Ryan (Billy Magnussen) and Sarah (Sharon Horgan) take what is perceived the smartest route and head to the company that set up the kidnapping, so they could win. That is the moment where the group as a whole finds out that there is an actual kidnapping taking place.
Movies like Game Night are interesting to me. There’s no $150 million dollar plus budget, no over the top CGI, just plain humor, a bit of action, solid acting and some gunfire and explosions. The success that this movie had in theaters, I could see some more movies in the same vein being made in the very near future. One that comes to mind that will be releasing soon: TAG (find out more about that movie HERE) The gag reel will have you laughing!
