First and foremost, thank you to Warner Bros. Home Entertainment for allowing me to review the ALEX & ME Blu-Ray Combo Pack!
I do have to say, this movie has A LOT OF HEART, if not, ALL HEART! I think my family can relate to this movie from the aspect that I too had a son who played sports (baseball) and had plenty of opportunities for scholarships. The difference being that my daughter didn’t play soccer or any sports. But what did happen, is that I tried to do whatever I could to make sure that my son did whatever he could and that can take the focus off of the family as a whole. This also happens in the movie, with Reagan (Siena Agudong) and her brother Matt Cornett (Logan Wills). Matt is the star QB of the high school and also the town they live in. He’s in the process of deciding where he wants to go to college.
Alex & Me does a good job of showing Reagan from many different perspectives, vulnerable, leading, following and so much more. The premise of the movie, is Reagan is in the “shadow” of her brother, misses out on an opportunity to join a club team named Crush. She gets upset cause she doesn’t make the team. There’s also a new boy at school, who she seems to like, but her nemesis Claire also happens to like the same boy. Clair is the star striker on the Crush, so Raegan gets hit with a double whammy. In going to her room, getting upset and tearing things of her favorite soccer player Alex Morgan off of her wall, she slips and bumps her head. When she wakes up, the first thing she sees is her mom and beside her Alex Morgan. Raegan has a hard time deciphering whether Alex is really there with her or if she’s seeing things.
Raegan just wants the opportunity to play the game she loves, have her father be there for her in the same way that he is for her brother and maybe catch the eye of Ben. The thing that Alex Morgan teaches her, besides working on her game, is to prioritize. She will have to choose between trying to catch Ben’s eye, hanging out with friends, or putting in work when no one else would be, which is how Alex got where she’s at, an Olympic Gold Medalist. When she actually finds the composure to talk to Ben, he lets Raegan know that his cousin is on a club that could use an additional player. The club turns out to be less than desirable, but like Alex says, an opportunity to play is an opportunity to play and hone your craft. The ladies take some lumps, but learn valuable lessons along the way.
I SERIOUSLY RECOMMEND THIS MOVIE TO YOU IF YOU HAVE A DAUGHTER WHO IS IN SPORTS and ESPECIALLY IF YOU HAVE A DAUGHTER WHO IS IN SPORTS AND HAS AN OLDER BROTHER WHO IS ALSO AN ATHLETE! THIS IS ALSO SOMETHING THAT PARENTS COULD WATCH AND SEE HOW OUR KIDS SEE THINGS, INSTEAD OF JUST HOW WE SEE THINGS.
The bonus features also add to the heart the movie has! My 12-year old seriously enjoyed the movie! He wasn’t expecting it to tug at his heart strings!
RATING: A++
