First and foremost, thank you to Warner Bros. Home Entertainment for allowing me to review the Ocean’s 8 Blu-Ray Combo Pack!
I am a big fan of the original trilogy (no, not the Star Wars one!), Ocean’s 11, 12 and 13. The even more interesting thing, all three of my kids loved those movies as well! I rounded up all three of them (12, 15 and 19) to watch the Ocean’s 8 Blu-Ray.
The cast consists of Sandra Bullock as Debbie Ocean, Cate Blanchett as Lou, Midori Francis as April, Helena Bonham Carter as Rose Weil, Mindy Kaling as Amita, Rihanna as Nine Ball, Dakota Fanning as Penelope Stern, Whitney White as Cynthia, Awkwafina as Constance, Sarah Paulson as Tammy, Anne Hathaway as Daphne Kluger, Richard Armitage as Claude Becker and Elliott Gould as Reuben. Directed by Gary Ross, who takes the role as director from Steven Soderbergh.
The movie tells the story of Debbie Ocean putting together a crew of women (a la Ocean’s 11) to go after a one-of-a-kind $150 million Cartier diamond necklace, the catch being that it will be on someone’s neck at the time they have to try and steal it. Bullock is the general manager/coach of this team of thieves, Lou (Blanchett) being the standout bad ass that does whatever needs to be done, while also being the voice of reason at the absolute right time. Amita (Kaling) is a jeweler who has previously worked with Ocean. Constance (Awkwafina) is the member of the crew with the most street cred/knowledge. Tammy (Paulson) is the mom in the group, who is trying to live a normal, white picket fence life, while still surviving by selling some of the merchandise from previous heists. Rihanna’s Nine Ball is a hacker who loves messing with anything electronic, who is quiet and to herself, but confident in her skills. Rose Weil (Bonham Carter) is a fashion designer for the stars who had lost favor with the industry, but has the potential to get that favor back with the right celebrity wearing her fashions. The last member of the crew is Kluger (Hathaway), who is the star that the necklace will be on at the time the crew will try to steal it. Hathaway as much as Bullock and Blanchett stands out, but in a twist, is an actor, playing an actor.
There’s not much, if anything wrong with the movie minus the lack of depth/backstory on a couple of the characters.
Each of my kids, loved the movie for a different reason. My youngest son, the 12-year old, like the fact that there was a hack involved in the set up of the heist. My daughter loved that all of the leads were women. My oldest son loved the payoff at the end and how EVERYONE got something out of it.
The Met Gala “re-imagining” BONUS FEATURE explains how it was recreated. There’s A LOT going on there!
All in all, Ocean’s 8 is a solid movie and would be a great watch with the family, especially on a Friday night, like TONIGHT!

Synopsis:
Five years, eight months, 12 days…and counting. That’s how long Debbie Ocean (Sandra Bullock)—just released from prison—has been concocting the greatest heist of her storied career.
She knows what it’s going to take—a team of the best in their field, starting with her former partner-in-crime Lou (Cate Blanchett). Together, they recruit a crew of specialists: jeweler Amita (Mindy Kaling), street con Constance (Awkwafina), expert fence Tammy (Sarah Paulson), hacker Nine Ball (Rihanna) and fashion designer Rose Weil (Helena Bonham Carter).
The target is $150 million in diamonds—diamonds that will adorn the neck of world-famous actress Daphne Kluger (Anne Hathaway), who will be center stage at the event of the year, the Met Gala. Their plan appears rock solid, but it will need to be flawless if the team is to get in and get away—all in plain sight.
