As the box office numbers for Bohemian Rhapsody sore high, the reviews are hitting a sour note. So where do I stand on this Killer Queen of a biopic?
I’m one of those people, I like to go into a movie with an open mind and I try not to let reviews decide my overall thoughts and opinions. My excitement for this movie to be released was unreal. Queen holds a beautiful, nostalgic place in my heart and this film lit a new found love for their music. Seriously though, Under Pressure has been on repeat on my Spotify since!
I started to read the reviews for this movie and was absolutely shocked by the first impressions of many. Regardless of the negative backlash, I fell in love with this film to the point of wanting more. I think people went into the film expecting something much more focused on their music and not the history and how the events played out for this legendary band. Considering they jam packed many years of Queen from the very beginning to one of their final performances, the final package was brilliant and well done.
Rami Malek, the actor chosen to play the role of Freddie Mercury was spot on and embraced the role beautifully. Rami hit gold with every movement and sold me on Freddie’s conceited demeanor. The feel and bond between the band members flowed very nicely throughout. Having a peek into the history of some of their greatest hits gave me a bigger appreciation and outlook on everything they fought for as a band.
With the film currently sitting at $141.7 million Worldwide, and considering the films budget was $52 million, this is a big win. Despite the reviews, always go into a film and finish it off with your own perception.
Overall, this movie was a bittersweet masterpiece. If you haven’t seen it, you need to run to a theater and watch it right now, and then maybe a second time.
