First and foremost, THANK YOU to Wired Productions Ltd. and Caged Element Inc. for allowing me to review GRIP: COMBAT RACING for the PlayStation 4!
Let me start by saying that I LOVE THIS GAME! Seriously! It caught both my son’s and my eyes when I first saw the announcement trailer!
I have been gaming for many, many moons. This game took me back to my childhood, with some of the feel of SpyHunter, R.C. Pro-Am, F-Zero and the like. It definitely pays homage to the original PlayStation game: ROLLCAGE. You get to race on 3D tracks like all of those, get to shoot energy shots, similar to the way SpyHunter does, but the one thing that takes GRIP: Combat Racing above and beyond, is the ability to control your vehicle in mid-air and also driving on walls, ceilings and even if the vehicle is turned upside-down. You’re battling time, the track itself with different obstacles built in and then of course, the other players/vehicles on the track. You are given different perks, such as speed boosts and the ability to upgrade different parts of your vehicle, including: new vehicles, decals, tires, rims and other customizations.
The game offers single-player races along with a battle arena section where you race against other players on tracks with varying conditions and power-ups, a multi-player if you will.
Of course, my 12-year old son has made it further (or is it farther?) on GRIP: COMBAT RACING! But as with all games, once you start remembering the tracks, the better you’ll get at the game. I only have one complaint and it’s not about anything to do within the game, it’s the fact that I want an arcade version, where I can sit in a seat and have the gas and brake pedals and a steering wheel!
The controls take a little getting used to. While not being difficult, you learn very quickly that you can drive yourself off the track and fall into oblivion if you’re not paying attention to your surroundings. There is a walk through tutorial that teaches you what buttons control what.
GRIP: Combat Racing is arriving just in time for the holidays! It would make the perfect gift for your game, whether a younger or more mature one, like myself! The game will be available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam!
Rating: A+
