Rockstar Games have announced some exciting new updates for Red Dead Online, the multiplayer portion of the hugely successful Red Dead Redemption 2!
Red Dead Redemption 2 was an amazing game. I thoroughly enjoyed playing it. The multiplayer mode is Red Dead Online. This has seen some regular updates by Rockstar over the past few months. Recently , Rockstar Games revealed a whole bunch of new content updates for this mode. This new update contains more co-op story missions as well as more activities during free roam mode. Here is what Rockstar had to say as well as a brand new trailer:
Today’s update to Red Dead Online brings a host of new gameplay including new cooperative story missions, Free Roam activities and the addition of Poker alongside a range of updates and improvements that strengthen and stabilize the foundational world of the Red Dead Online experience.
New CO-OP Missions:
RDR Online had a few story missions as well, following the revenge tale of Jessica LeClerk. This new update continues that story with some brand new co-op missions. These missions will play out differently depending on how much honor your online characters have. For example, the dishonorable players will be taking part in a robbery where as the honorable players will be aiding the marshall in fighting off gangs etc. Check out the synopsis for these new story missions:
The revenge saga of Jessica LeClerk continues today with new missions for both honorable and dishonorable players in A Land of Opportunities. After the epic showdown in Fort Mercer that concluded the last series of missions, players will help Mrs. LeClerk get closer to the truth behind the murder of her husband. In the more honorable Gunslinger path, battle the Del Lobos gang and help Marshall Tom Davies save Valentine – and his own neck.In the Outlaw strand, outwit lawmen to assist Samson Finch in highway robbery, and pull off a daring high-stakes theft at the Saint Denis Bank. Both paths lead to a rendezvous in Blackwater with a dangerous adversary.
NEW Free Roam Missions:
Rockstar has added some brand new missions for players to take part in during free roam in RDR Online. Some of these missions will feature characters seen in the Red Dead Redemption 2 story mode (such as the Pig farmers!). Here is the synopsis:
Free Roam Missions also expand today with new characters from the story of Red Dead Redemption 2 and a variety of new and diverse mission types. Bring your Posse to meet with Thomas the Skiff Captain down in Bayou Nwa for some honest work or visit the disconcertingly hospitable Aberdeen Pig Farmers to get your hands extremely dirty, and look out for more characters to appear soon.
NEW Posse Versus Challenges:
Rockstar have added new posse challenges as well. These include Competitive Fishing, Bird Shooting and Herb Picking contests.
NEW Dynamic Events:
These are a great new way of earning XP and money in online. As you free roam around the map you can encounter people in need or can ambush other gangs. These events can result in gold bars too if you are lucky. This should help make the online map feel a lot more alive.
POKER!
This is by far the biggest addition to online mode and is something a lot of fans have been requesting. Poker is one of the most enjoyable side activities in Red Dead Redemption 2. It is very detailed and can be a lot of fun. There are going to be private and public tables available at poker locations throughout the map. Private matches are invite-only and you can invite friends to join a game of Hold ‘Em. Public tables pay out even higher rewards and can be with up to 6 players. Rockstar stated that ‘all poker tables seat up to 6 players, available in 5 locations: Blackwater, Saint Denis, Tumbleweed, Valentine and Flatneck Station.’ Check out some screenshots below:
This has a lot of potential in Red Dead Online. Activities like this really help the open world stand out compared to other online games and can be a very enjoyable experience with friends.
NEW Showdown Mode:
A new mode called Overrun has been added:
Mark your territory and lay claim to as much land as you can, working your way behind enemy lines to capture territory from your opponents while defending what’s yours. Whoever holds the most land at the end of this new Showdown Mode wins.
NEW Weapons and Clothing:
Rockstar have added a range of new clothing items as well as the LeMat revolver:
The new clothing and weapons are available from the various in-game stores.
Playing Styles and Hostility system improvements:
Since free roam mode forces you to play in sessions with other people online; it is great that Rockstar have added the ability to control how you interact with these players. There is now a OFFENSIVE and DEFENSIVE playing style selectable in the player menu online. By default, all player styles have been set to offensive as this is how traditional RDR Online players normally interact with each other. In this style you are able to engage with other players as long as you are willing to accept the consequences.
In contrast, the defensive mode lets you spend time exploring the map in peace. You do not have to worry about engaging in conflict as you will take reduced damage, cannot be targeted with auto-aim or even lassoed. Anyone who attacks a player using defensive mode will receive penalties. This is good for those who don’t like to be constantly attacked in free roam.
Rockstar have also heavily improved the hostility system in-game. This system tracks aggressive behaviour online and can make hostile players clearly visible to others on the map.
As before, player blips change color – beginning dark blue and transitioning to red as their hostile play persists. A bright red blip indicates an enemy. With today’s update, players will never receive Hostility or Bounty increases for defending themselves against a player who is blipped as an enemy, or for killing high Hostility players. If a player attacks another player, they will not be marked as an enemy to everyone – but rather to the attacked player only, who will not receive a penalty for firing back. You can view your current Hostility level through the Player Menu. As you become more hostile, you become more visible on other player’s radars at longer distances and will respawn further and further away from your point of death – at the highest level of Hostility, you will respawn in a different region.
This update is available now for Red Dead Redemption 2 owners. It is also worth noting that Rockstar announced that anyone who logs in to RDR Online this week gets 15 gold bars and will see a 25% XP increase in story missions, free roam missions, showdown modes and more. There are some other great gameplay improvements as well, which are listed in the patch notes found on Rockstar Games Newswire site.
