REVIEW: Supercon DVD

First and foremost, thank you to Sony Pictures Home Entertainment for allowing me to review SUPERCON on DVD!

Supercon details what many believe goes on a a superhero/comic convention. You get former TV stars, that might not necessarily want to be there, but might be in need of the paycheck. Keith Mahar (Russell Peters) was a child star in the 1980’s, playing a sidekick to “Tex Johnson” who is played by Adam King (Clancy Brown). On the TV show, Mahar’s character has testicular cancer. Mahar is definitely in need of the paycheck from this particular con as he is facing divorce and bad representation from his former manager. He meets up with Matt Wheeler (Ryan Kwanten) who is also a regular on the con circuit. Wheeler has a lot of charisma and is easily recognized by fans. This doesn’t sit well with Mahar. As they are trying to get credentials to the con, they see King pull up in his loud Corvette along with his lady. There is an overall resentment towards King, especially from Mahar, who is always called by his stage name and made fun of by King. Wheeler also meets up with a former flame named Allison McNeeley, who is also at the con working. King is a necessary evil for everyone. Without King, the crowds would be smaller and it might not be lucrative enough for all of the people that are there working. The hard thing about King and his attitude, is that he believes that he should be paid for everything that he does.

After the first day of the Supercon, the group head to go eat at what they believed would be a location where they could sort of be alone. Things come to a screeching halt when King pulls up with Gil Bartell (Mike Epps), who operates Supercon. Both of the groups go at each other. Wheeler causes problems getting into it with King using BBQ sauce. Mahar ends up getting fired along with Allison.

To get back at King, as a collective, Wheeler talks Mahar and Allison into at least thinking about pulling a con on the Supercon.

There are moments of hilarity and even some action, but it does take quite a while to get to that in the movie. John Malkovich’s Sid Newberry is definitely the standout performance of Supercon. Newberry handles King the roughest, putting him in his place during King’s talk, where ALL of the con is attending.

The plot twist at the end of the movie make it worth at least checking out, because not everything is as what it seems!
